Let’s start with the fundamentals. Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for:
- People 65 and older
- People under 65 with certain disabilities
- People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant)
Medicare is divided into four main parts:
- Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, home health care, and hospice care.
- Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment.
- Part C (Medicare Advantage):Offered by private insurance companies, these plans provide all the benefits of Original Medicare (Parts A and B), often with additional coverage, such as prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing.
- Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps pay for prescription drugs.
